Beyond I Can’t

I’m learning a lot about life outside of “I can’t.” To be honest, I understand why so many people get stuck there. There are real challenges that come with stepping into “I can.” Dreaming is the easy part. Most of us have imagined versions of our lives that feel bigger, freer, and more aligned with who we truly are. But what we’re rarely taught is how to deal with the obstacles that show up between the dream and the decision to pursue it.
Those obstacles can suffocate creatives. At least, that’s what it felt like to me. I remember living in an “I can’t” mindset while carrying so much vision at the same time. I had ideas. I had hope. I had imagination. What I didn’t have was someone telling me those dreams were actually possible. As life starts demanding responsibility, survival slowly replaces dream-chasing. And before you realize it, imagination gets quieter.

Creativity is one of the main characteristics of our Creator. It’s something we do naturally. But somehow, somewhere along the way, many of us disconnect from that flow as the world begins demanding more of our physical labor, our emotions, and even our imagination.
The shift from “I can’t” to “I can” goes far beyond believing something can be done. You have to believe that you can do it. And sometimes that means surrounding yourself with people who already have. If you grew up anything like me, you may not have had access to those kinds of achievers in your everyday environment.
So I found another way.
The internet and books became my way of traveling. They became my way of connecting. They became my way of surrounding myself with people who had already done what once looked impossible to me. I read about their struggles. I studied the steps they took. I paid attention to the doors that closed on them and the many “no’s” they received along the way. But most exciting of all, I read about the one “yes” that changed everything.

Eventually, I started looking at my own life differently. If they could do it, why couldn’t I? If they could push through similar obstacles, why couldn’t I? Things started becoming clearer.
We may all start from different places, but we share one thing in common: the ability to create, shape, and form the lives we want to live.
So I decided to go after my one “yes.” I decided to create my way through life. I wanted better, so I chose to create better not just by dreaming, but by believing. Believing that I have what it takes to make those dreams real. Believing that God is guiding me as I move forward. Believing enough to finally release the mindset that quietly strangles so many creatives before they ever begin. And maybe that’s where your shift starts, too.
